Missions and Outreach

Outreach & Missions Committee October 2010

The O&M Committee has been helping with two Outreach projects recently.
Cherry J. put forward the idea of helping low income families by providing fully equipped school backpacks to Middle School and High School students. Cherry who recently retired from the school system has observed that there are many children on Salt Spring whose parents cannot provide them with every thing they need to get off to a good start when school begins. The Elementary Schools are already helped by Salt Spring Community Services but the Middle and School children are not eligible for the same help. O&M has purchased 12 school bags and parishioners have generously donated enough cash and school supplies to fill them. Fourteen bags were delivered to the school principals just before school began and they will, with the assistance of teachers, distribute them to the students who are most in need.

On Sunday October 3rd a Fund raising Dinner was held to assist Centro Santa Catalina, a faith based community centre on the outskirts of Juarez, Mexico. Andrew P created a wonderful Mexican Menu which included Chicken Mole and Key Lime Pie. Alvaro Sanchez and Dick Miller provided the excellent live music. This is the beginning of a new outreach relationship between the Anglican Parish and Centro Santo Catalina. A short presentation with photos provided an overview of the programs offered at the centre. Donations to the CSC Scholarship Fund are still coming in and we have received almost $3,000 so far. The sum of $25 is sufficient to equip an elementary school child with supplies and uniform for one year. For further information please read the separate article on Centro Santa Catalina.

There are a few changes to the O&M committee. Heather C. is Committee Chair as of September 1st. Joanna S will serve as Treasurer. Cherry J. is serving as liaison with Salt Spring schools. Joanna S. and Sue S. are the liaisons for Centro Santa Catalina. The committee is still looking for one or two new eager members to join with us.
