“The General” is a 1926 American silent comedy film (B&W 80 minutes) starring Buster Keaton - click here for more on the production of this film. “The General” is also the name of the American steam locomotive built in 1855 - click here – best known as the engine stolen by Union spies in the Great Locomotive Chase - an attempt to cripple the Confederate rail network during the American Civil War - the true story that inspired the making of this film.
Organist Ed Norman and his wife Susan now live on Galiano Island. A brief bio can be downloaded here. He continues to perform on and off the island, most recently playing the Historic Wurlitzer Pipe Organ at Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre for the Monday Night Silent Movie series – click here. Ed has been playing the Orpheum Wurlitzer for over 40 years, usually accompanying the VSO and Bach Choirs.
Salt Springers are fortunate to have engaged him for this film presentation and concert where he will improvise accompaniment on the magnificent 4-manual Rogers Organ at All Saints by-the-Sea, Ganges.
The All Saints sanctuary is blessed with a Four-Manual Rodgers Hybrid (digital/pipe) Organ and wonderful acoustics. This instrument is a powerhouse that delivers the digital sound voices sourced from some of the finest pipe organs in the world. They are rich in colour and deliver a realism found nowhere else thanks to the care Rodgers sound engineers use in capturing long, detailed samples using up to eight microphones.
